The Art and Science of Garden Bed Design
Garden beds can dramatically transform any outdoor space, adding color, texture, and structure to both residential and commercial properties. In Northwest Indiana, the key to a successful garden bed lies in understanding the local environment - from the native plants that thrive here to the soil and rock types most suited for sustainable landscaping.
Designing and Constructing Garden Beds:
A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Initial Consultation and Site Assessment
The first step in creating a new garden bed involves a thorough site assessment. Landscaping experts visit your property to evaluate existing garden beds or potential sites for new ones. This visit includes taking precise measurements to determine the amount of soil, mulch, or other amendments needed. This initial assessment is crucial to tailor a garden design that enhances curb appeal and complements the natural beauty of the area.
Step 2: Selecting Plantings and Materials
Choosing the right materials and plants is vital for ensuring the garden bed is both beautiful and manageable. In Northwest Indiana, incorporating native plants like Purple Coneflower and Black-eyed Susan, which are adapted to the region’s climate (zones 7B and 8A), is recommended. These plants generally require less maintenance and support local biodiversity. Additionally, materials such as river rock, local stone, or organic mulch are selected not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their practical benefits in garden health and maintenance.
Step 3: Design Drafting
After selecting the materials and plantings, a hand-drawn garden bed design is provided. This design outlines the shape of the garden and specifies the placement of each plant. It is a collaborative process where you can make adjustments to ensure the final landscape meets your vision and practical needs.
Step 4: Site Preparation
The actual work begins with clearing out any existing overgrowth and defining the edges of the garden bed. This step is essential for distinguishing the garden bed from other areas of the yard, such as lawns or walkways, ensuring that each element of the landscape stands out distinctly.
Step 5: Plant Layout
With a clean slate, the layout of new plantings can commence. This involves placing each plant according to the garden bed design, considering future growth patterns and the overall aesthetic goals. This step may include some adjustments to optimize the display and health of the plants.
Step 6: Adding Soil and Mulch
Once the plants are correctly positioned, the garden bed is filled with fresh soil enriched with compost to support plant health. Then, a layer of mulch or stone is added. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, making the garden bed easier to maintain, while stones can provide a clean, decorative look that contrasts beautifully with the greenery.
Step 7: The Finished Look
The final step is the most rewarding—seeing the transformation of your space into a vibrant, living landscape. A well-designed garden bed not only enhances the aesthetic value of your property but also creates a space for local wildlife and promotes ecological balance.
Creating a garden bed in Northwest Indiana involves much more than just planting a few flowers. It requires an understanding of the local ecosystem, thoughtful planning, and careful material selection. By incorporating native plants and appropriate materials, you can ensure that your garden is both beautiful and sustainable.

I have used Jesus and his crew at sky landscaping for my property in northern Michigan and he has done a phenomenal job maintaining and staying on top of the work. He is a dedicated individual and cares about the wants and needs of each customer and seriously devotes his time because when he does it, he does it right the first time! The quality behind his work is worth the time and price so at least check them out. Looking forward to doing more projects with Sky landscaping - you should too!
I have used Jesus for many years now. He landscaped my front and back yard plus put in a waterfall for me in my back yard. It is all breath taking. I have had so many people drive by and ask who was the landscaper that designed and did all the beautiful work. I am getting up there in age and if I call him to come and help me out, he ALWAYS makes time for me. His work is exceptional and Jesus is very professional and the nicest person (along with his crew) to have work done for you. Jesus is very knowledgeable with so many ideas as to how to make your yard look beautiful. Would never even consider using anyone else. I would rate him and his crew a 10+ and he is also very reasonable.
I had Sky Landscaping remove 10 dead pine trees from my property. They came early Saturday morning and went right to work. After a long day they left and returned early Sunday morning. Working in temperatures in the teens, each tree was cut down and limbs removed cut up and hauled away. I was very impressed with the cleanup, all of the small twigs and all chainsaw chips were removed. Everything was blown off lawn and hauled away. Except for the remaining stumps you wouldn't know anything done. I highly recommend them and I will have the do future work, they were very polite and business like.
I have nothing but great things to say about Jesus and sky landscaping. I have used him two times now to plant things move things. Here’s what I love about him and the company and his helper.. Professional, kind, and DEPENDABLE!!! he returns phone calls promptly and texts. Makes an appointment to come and see about a project. He’s there exactly on time makes a time and a date when to do the work he is there exactly on time. Someone you should highly consider the next time you have a garden project I have seen him do some fire pits for other people and stepping stones. There’s many many things that he can do I just have not had him do any of them. Another great quality is if Jesus is not sure of what the task entails he does lots of research and will be honest about what he can do. I highly encourage you to contact him for your next project in your garden or maintenance. Robin Lakeside Michigan
Plants are beautiful and they always clean up unlike my plumber or electrician and lawn guy. Very thoughtful in explaining what he is doing and listens to my concerns.
This company is owned by an exceptional young landscaper Jesus Garcia. He has been our landscape designer for nearly 20 years. His knowledge and talent extends from landscape design to beautiful ponds and water treatments. His knowledge regarding plant selection and maintenance and local wildlife is exceptional. We’ve learned so much about our beautiful property and our natural surroundings. So much so, that we have recently bought farm property with ponds, creeks, woods and flower meadows.
